Town of Smithtown Invites Local Youth to Write Holiday Cards to Senior Citizens Who May be Alone for the Holidays
The Town of Smithtown will serve as a collection site for holiday greeting cards, to be distributed to senior citizens who may be spending the holidays alone. Young residents and their families are invited to create their own greeting cards, or choose a template card, customize it and email them, or drop off at Town Hall for distribution. The Town will then deliver the cards to the Senior Center and local nursing homes for special delivery.
“This time of year is renowned as the most wonderful time to build happy memories with families and friends. It can also be a very lonely time of year for many senior citizens without family or friends to spend the holidays with. Teaching our youth to connect with our wiser, elder generations through kindness with something as simple as sending a holiday greeting card to a local resident, can be equally rewarding for young people and their parents. We are blessed, so let's spread good tidings together and brighten up someone’s holiday season.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim
To participate, download a selected design from the Town of Smithtown Website, or create a card and email positive penpal-style letters, drawings, pictures, or other types of artwork to SPIO@smithtownny.gov. Please include “Holiday Cards for Seniors” in the subject line.
