On Saturday, September 25th, over 300 households dropped by the Town of Smithtown Municipal Services Facility to safely shred over eight tons of sensitive documents. This bi-annual shredding event was held courtesy of the Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, Municipal Services Facility, and the Department of Public Safety.
“When we first set out to initiate the shred events, we knew it would be a valuable and popular service for the residents. Saturday’s turnout solidifies our expectations as residents continue to protect themselves against identity theft while safely disposing of unwanted documents in an environmentally friendly manner. My thanks to DEW, MSF and Public Safety who do an incredible job at seamlessly orchestrating these successful shred events.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim
Over the course of Saturday, a total of 341 vehicles pulled into Smithtown’s Municipal Services Facility to safely and securely dispose of 8.67 tons of sensitive documents. The record holder for this event was in September of 2020, with 440 households and more than sixteen tons of sensitive documents safely shredded. However, due to the peak of the Coronavirus Pandemic in April of 2020, the Town only hosted the one shredding event last year.
A steady stream of residents arrived at MSF throughout the day, observing strict COVID-19 safety guidelines, to dispose of personal documents which were then safely destroyed.
Additional staff and a second industrial shredder truck were incorporated into this year's event to ensure fast and efficient service for residents. All paper was safely shredded by Data Shredding Service, Inc. using the “Shreddersaurus.”
The September event took place at the Municipal Services Facility located at 85 Old Northport Road in Kings Park from 9:00AM through 3:00PM. All personal documents were safely destroyed by Data Shredding Service, Inc., a full-service confidential shredding service located on Corporate Drive in Hauppauge. The 2022 paper shredding events (2) will be scheduled for the Municipal Services Facility, and dates will be announced in the 2022 Refuse & Recycling calendar.
