Cookie: The World’s Best ‘Honey I’m Home’ Doorway Greeter

The Smithtown Animal Shelter’s Pet of the Week is the token ‘Welcome Waggin’ Miss Cookie. This eight year old terrier mix is destined to bring happiness and laughter to one lucky family. Cookie is a favorite among volunteers and serves as our professor pup for local Girl and Boy Scouts who tour the shelter weekly. Sadly, Cookie is often overlooked by adopters because of her age, despite having plenty of good years ahead of her. With a puppy-like demeanor and fantastic manners, she’s a great fit for families with kids, other dogs, or the empty nester looking for the world’s best “Honey I’m Home” doorway greeter!

As we approach the end of Adopt-a-Senior-Pet month and kick off the giving season, the team at the Smithtown Animal Shelter has set its sights on finding Cookie a home before the new year. Residents can help us by sharing Cookie’s story to friends and family who might be in the market to let a big dose of unconditional love into their homes.

Cookie came to the Smithtown Animal Shelter after her owner could no longer care for her. She has since been spayed, microchipped, and is fully up to date with all of her vaccinations. Cookie grew up playing with another dog as a companion, so she’s a good fit for a home with a canine companion. She’s great with kids as well, making Cookie perfect for any family who wants to add a grateful new addition.

November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month… the Smithtown Animal Shelter would like to remind all potential adopters of the many excellent qualities an older, wiser companion can provide. Senior pets are usually well-trained, loyal, and are far more obedient than a rambunctious puppy. The senior dogs and cats at our Shelter are temporary guests looking for a second chance at love. In turn, the gratitude that a senior companion animal can give is one of the most fulfilling types of affection one can receive. Cookie is the best of both worlds. She has the fun loving energy of a puppy, without any bad manners or habits, and has many years left to give joy and love to one lucky family.

If you are interested in meeting Cookie, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with her in a domestic setting, which includes our Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and our Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.

Thinking About Adoption:

The Smithtown Animal Shelter’s primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to us. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or we can set up an at home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets, or the household itself.

Walk-In Hours at Smithtown Animal Shelter are currently Monday - Friday 8AM - 4:30 PM and Saturday 8AM - 3:30PM. (Sunday’s: by appointment only). To Inquire about the Pet of the Week or to meet your potential soulmate, please call the Smithtown Animal & Adoption Center at 631-360-7575.
