September is a great time of year for Smithtown residents, as we watch our children head back to school for a new chapter of life and learning. Our Back-to-School supply drive was a huge success last week, as we collected enough items to fill at least 40 backpacks for the Smithtown Children’s Foundation. My gratitude goes out to the town’s employees and our residents who dropped off pre-filled backpacks & other school supplies. As a brief reminder, the bi-annual Free Paper Shredding event is Saturday, September 21st from 9AM-3PM at Town Hall. This is a free service for residents to safely and securely dispose of unwanted documents in an environmentally friendly manner.
Speaking of caring for the environment, I would like to remind the community that the glass recyclable containers at Town Hall, M.S.F. & the Highway Department should not be used to dump other waste. Smithtown has been exceptional when it comes to dropping off glass recycling items. So much in fact that we’ve ordered additional receptacles which will be going to St. James and Nesconset by the end of this month. When someone disposes of other waste; specifically non-recyclables, in and outside of the receptacles, the good folks who are trying to be environmentally responsible are unable to do so. Thank you for taking the initiative to keep Smithtown clean and green.
Finally, as we approach the peak of Hurricane Season, the Town of Smithtown would like to remind everyone to please be prepared before the Storm. We recently put together a Hurricane Preparedness Guide available online via the Home News & Announcements section of the Town’s website. This is a great resource for residents to keep handy. Also, you can watch our Keep it Safe Smithtown Series on Smithtown GTV via Youtube or Channel 18 for advice and tips on how to stay prepared year round.
