TOWN OF SMITHTOWN IS AWARDED TWO GRANTS FROM THE REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL

The Regional Economic Development Council of Long Island has awarded the Town of Smithtown $97,375 in grant funding. The Grants for The St. James Visioning Study and Stormwater Management Feasibility Study for Cordwood Path were announced shortly before Christmas in Albany by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

“I want to thank the Regional Economic Development Council and Governor Cuomo for awarding these grants to the Town, in addition to our team that helped write these Grants; Jen Mesiano, Chief John Valentine and our newly formed Grant Committee. We’re excited to begin implementing these studies and we couldn’t be more grateful for the many ways this funding will benefit our residents.” - Supervisor Edward R Wehrheim

The St. James Visioning Study grant for $25,000 will go toward community outreach and input for the planning of the St. James business district revitalization. The Stormwater Management Feasibility Study for Cordwood Path and Park grant awarded $72,375, to continue preservation of the water quality in Stony Brook Harbor by implementing new stormwater control and erosion control.

The Town of Smithtown was a runner-up in the REDC Long Island Downtown Revitalization Initiative Application for $10 Million in funding, in its application for Downtown Kings Park. The Town will apply in 2019 for the $10 Million DRI Grant again, with greater odds given the newly constructed transit oriented development and plans for sewer construction in the hamlet.

St. James Visioning Study: The Town will conduct a visioning study for the St. James central business district along Lake Avenue and North Country Road in St. James to economically and visually revitalize the business district and restore its place as the cultural and social hub of the community -- $25,000

Stormwater Management Feasibility Study for Cordwood Path and Park: The Town of Smithtown, in collaboration with the Villages of Head of Harbor and Nissequogue, will advance goals of their Local Waterfront Revitalization Programs to protect water quality of Stony Brook Harbor by preparing a Stormwater Management Feasibility Study for Cordwood Path and Park. The Study will provide strategies to improve stormwater management and erosion control and develop stormwater control concepts including green infrastructure and improvements to drainage infrastructure.-- $72,375

The Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) was developed in 2011 by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to promote economic growth and investment in ten regions of New York State. The council has granted over $5.4 billion in creating and maintaining over 220,000 jobs. The REDC’s contributions make the modernization and protection of the Town of Smithtown possible.
