The Smithtown Youth Bureau has enlisted over 95 teen volunteers for Global Youth Service Day on Saturday April 21st, 2018 from 10am - noon at Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve located at 200 New Highway in Commack.
All registered youth service day helpers will spend the morning at Hoyt Farm prepping the Pollinator Gardens, cleaning up the pasture woods and the animal stalls. The annual community service initiative will be included on the worldwide Global Youth Service Day map.
In addition to the physical work, the volunteers will learn how the work they do, on Global Youth Service Day, will help the ecosystem to thrive this year. By raking, weeding and thatching the pollinator gardens at Hoyt Farm, the youth service day volunteers will help to provide a habitat for local bee & butterfly species while helping to purify the production of produce for the community.
Did You Know: Pollinators like Butterflies & Bees help to feed the world?
-
Approximately 75 percent of all food crops grown in the United States depend on pollinator animals
- Plants absorb harmful pollutants through their leaves and roots, removing them from the air, soil, and water around them.
-
Pesticides and habitat loss are threatening the existence of bees, butterflies and other pollinators. By creating a pollination garden, the children will be protecting a species while aiding in organic production of produce which we rely on to feed the community.
