In 2019 the Town of Smithtown, in collaboration with consultants H2M Engineers, began the process of updating its Comprehensive Master Plan. This will guide future land use decisions, development projects, and infrastructure investment throughout the Town. During the initial phase, the Town conducted public workshops in each of the Town’s six hamlets to gather community input regarding existing conditions and the public's vision for the future. Additionally, the town collected public input through an online questionnaire to which more than 1,100 community members responded.

On December 15, 2020, the Town released the Draft Comprehensive Plan and initiated the State Environmental Quality Review process. In January and February 2021 the Town conducted six community outreach meetings to review the draft plan. The outreach meetings were well attended, with a total of about 180 participants. Many community members commented on the draft plan during the community outreach meetings or in writing. In consideration of these comments the Town Board amended the draft Plan at its June 8, 2021 meeting and held a subsequent public hearing on August 3, 2021. The amendments are described in the Planning Director’s June 2, 2021 Planning Advisory Report.

On May 3, 2023, the Town Board accepted the SEQRA Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement for the Comprehensive Plan for public review and comment. The DGEIS and all SEQRA documents related to the Comprehensive Plan can be accessed by CLICKING HERE.
