St. James Water District

Responsibilities & Services

The St. James Water District serves portions of Smithtown and St. James. The District is governed by a Board of Water Commissioners, which meets at every regularly scheduled Town Board meeting. Water district employees are on call 24/7.

Water Rates

Effective January 1, 2023 water rates are 0.020063 per each cubic foot of water usage, and a quarterly base fee of $28.90 


As of January 1, 2021, all bills will include a $20 Water Quality Treatment Charge.  Learn more about the Water Quality Treatment Charge HERE.


Water Quality


Water quality is regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the New York State Health Department, and the Suffolk County Health Department.

A Consumer Confidence Report is available to our customers annually by May 31st.

Water Bill Notices

  • Bills more than 60 days outstanding are subject to a 10% penalty.
  • Unpaid balances become tax liens on October 15th of every year.
