Transportation Program
Recognizing that the lack of accessible transportation is one of the biggest obstacles that people with disabilities must face, the Town of Smithtown’s Office for People with Disabilities offers a free handicapped accessible transportation service for town residents.

This program has been in existence since 1990, when the Society for Lending Comforts to the Sick donated a handicapped accessible mini bus to the town’s Office for People with Disabilities.

The Handi-Van
The “handi-van” is equipped with a motorized safety locking wheelchair lift and can accommodate seven persons, one of them in a wheelchair.

The transportation service provides free “curb to curb” transportation for residents requiring the assistance of wheelchairs, long leg braces, crutches, guide dogs or aides in order to be ambulatory. It may be used by residents with disabilities for transportation within the Town of Smithtown, but highest priority will be given to medical related trips.

Service Operating Hours
The service operates Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m.– 3:30 p.m. Appointments are scheduled subject to availability, and may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

If you or someone you know could use this service, contact the Office for People with Disabilities at 360-7642. An application form, along with a complete set of instructions for the program will be sent upon request, or download the application.

Be sure to read the Instructions & Eligibility Requirements for Handi-Van Application and contact us with any questions.
